Sergio Leone drew inspiration from real engravings and photographs of the American Civil War and the Andersonville (Georgia) camp in 1864, taken by Matthew Brady, where mass executions of prisoners, overcrowding, and even cannibalism took place. He included a band of musicians playing to drown out the torture.
