The story is inspired by Jack London’s short story “The Minions of Midas”, published in 1901, in which a powerful businessman is subjected to a bizarre blackmail scheme: if he refuses to pay a large sum of money, the self-styled “Midas’s Favorites” will kill a random person on a specific date and add a new victim periodically until they achieve their goal.
