Maruja and her husband Manolo were forced to flee Spain after the Civil War. They’ve lived in Paris ever since, but have never been able to leave their past and the reasons that led them to exile behind. They work as servants for an American ambassador and his family, the Jolis. The Jolis are overwhelmed by all the social gatherings they have, so their son Alan has practically been raised by Maruja and Manolo. This year, Maruja discovers that it could be her last summer, something that will encourage her to confront her past and return to her roots on a trip to Spain where she will have to ensure that Alan grows up to be a good man. In doing so, Manolo will be challenged by the secrets their marriage managed to bury long ago.
