It was built in the 14th century in granite masonry combined with brick on the remains of an older fortification, possibly of Roman origin and in turn, on an ancient Celtiberian fort. Its main function was not war, but to serve as a place of recreation for the Castilian royalty and nobility, who found abundant hunting in the beautiful valleys and mountains surrounding it. In the 16th century, the keep was raised and a large artillery cube was built. After that, the castle was transformed into a porticoed Renaissance palace, according to Castilian custom.
