The Mercado Chico has been and continues to be the nerve center of the city of Ávila, a marketplace, a meeting place for the City Council, and a venue for celebrations. Several architects contributed to its construction. Work began in the late 18th century based on plans by Antonio Cuerbo, but the square wasn't completed until the 19th century. The town hall was designed by Vázquez de Zúñiga in 1865.
