In Prohibition-era United States, Grim Doel deliberately has himself imprisoned to help four prisoners escape—The Irishman, The One-Armed Man, Jeremiah, and The Engineer—and takes them to the headquarters of his illegal alcohol trafficking organization. For five thousand dollars each, the four agree to serve under Doel’s command to destroy the distillery of a rival gang—Sir Louis Baimont’s—located in an old monastery on Gull Island.
