American Robert Jordan (Gary Cooper), alias “The Englishman,” fought in the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) as part of the Lincoln Brigade. He is an expert in special operations behind enemy lines: he has blown up trains, power grids, and weapons depots. On the eve of a major offensive, the Republican command tasks him with destroying a bridge, the main logistical artery of Franco’s army. María (Ingrid Bergman), a young woman saved from the firing squad, and Pilar, the wife of Pablo, a tough and stubborn man, will participate in the operation and maintain their fighting spirit until the end of the war.
