Based on the novel Tea Rooms by Luisa Carnés, it tells the story of several employees of a distinguished tea room near Puerta del Sol in 1930s Madrid. One of the workers is Matilde (Helena Ezquerro), a young woman from a humble family who lives with her mother, Rosario (Miryam Gallego), and her three siblings. She arrives looking for work at La Moderna, one of the most elegant cafés in Madrid. Before entering, she runs into Iñigo (Almagro San Miguel), her teenage love, a young man she hasn’t seen for eight years, since the tragic death of Matilde’s father interrupted their newborn love story. Iñigo is now a well-off young man, right-hand man to Don Jaime (José Luís García-Pérez), one of the city’s most important businessmen. Passion rekindles between the two young people, but Carla (Stéphanie Magnin), Don Jaime’s wife and Iñigo’s former girlfriend, whom she has not yet given up on, is not willing to allow it.
