Castle of Zamora

Architecture and heritage

Castle

This 11th century fortress was ordered to be built by Ferdinand I, not as a palatial castle but as a fortress to protect the city. The Castle of Zamora lived a time of great splendor in the Middle Ages, undergoing an important transformation in the 18th century to convert it into an artillery fort and thus adapt it to the new methods of attack and defense of cities from artillery. Rhomboid in shape, it is made up of a series of concentric structures, a moat, counter-moat, residential body, interior courtyard and keep. Both the fortress, its defensive structures, as well as the surrounding gardens were rehabilitated and conditioned in 2009.
