Built upon the site of an 11th-century Romanesque cathedral, it stands as a splendid example of how art, in its various styles, can come together to create a magnificent architectural masterpiece. The apses at its east end, dating from the late Gothic period of the 15th century, bear a striking resemblance to German cathedrals; its southeast façade beautifully embodies the Renaissance style, and the monumental main façade is imbued with the power of the Baroque.
