The art center is built on what was the old provincial prison, an eclectic style building built in 1930. The current renovation was carried out by the Spanish architect Horacio Fernández del Castillo. In this renovation, an attempt was made to respect the historical memory of the building in some of its rooms (such as in the central room that preserves the cell doors and the original iron grillework), while adding new exhibition and management spaces that adapt in a more functional way to the programmatic needs of the center.
