León Castle (Old Prison)

Cities and urban spaces

Prison

It is an emblematic and representative building of civil architecture in the city of León, also known as the “Old Prison”. It is a unique construction with two attached buildings, which maintains the appearance of a fortress and prison: bars on the windows, patios isolated from the public road by seven-meter-high walls and an imposing stone staircase attached to the medieval prison during the 19th century. To the east is the “Count's Tower”, occupied by the person in charge of defending the city walls. It was a prison for nobles until 1862 when it was converted for common prisoners, building a square structure attached to the wall, with three floors, topped with a Canseco clock.
