The stately town of Lerma is situated on a hill overlooking the valley of the Arlanza River. Dating back to pre-Roman times, the town reached its peak under the Duke of Lerma, favorite of Philip III, between 1598 and 1618. The urban layout is one of the most important monumental and urban complexes of the 17th century, built in the Spain of the last Austrians.
