Mount Hijedo is one of the largest and best-preserved deciduous forests in the north of the country. It occupies a large area spread across several municipalities in both the province of Burgos and the Cantabrian region. It is an example of a mixed forest dominated by sessile oak, but also includes beech, holly, alder, birch, and hazel trees, as well as some impressive and majestic ancient yew trees. Numerous species of birds and mammals inhabit this magnificent Atlantic forest. This area is included in the Natura 2000 Network and has been declared a Site of Community Importance (SCI).
