Palacio de los Guzmanes

Architecture and heritage

Historic heritage, Palaces, Public buildings

This palace, one of the best examples of Spanish Renaissance palatial architecture, is attributed to the architect Rodrigo Gil de Hontañón. The main façade follows the scheme of the Monterrey Palace in Salamanca. It shows three bodies, the lower one with barred windows, the main one with balconies finished off in frontispieces and the upper one with a continuous gallery. The towers at the ends have one more body. The patio has double arches, the lower one with semicircular arches on Ionic columns and the upper one with carpanel arches supported by Corinthian columns; between them there are parapets carved with the family shields. The hallway and staircase also stand out. It is currently the headquarters of the Provincial Council of León.
