Villafranca del Bierzo was a military fort in Roman times that protected the gold route and the place where Asturians and caliphal troops fought during the Reconquista. Its geographical location, at the edge of the harsh valley of the Valcarce River, that made it an obligatory rest stop for pilgrims who wanted to see St. James the apostle in Galicia. In fact, many historians justify its flourishing to the hospitals that were created to care for walkers.
